Two Sides of the Same Coin
Proof testing and leak testing are closely related functions. We conduct proof testing in a non-destructive manner, the results determining whether a system or component can withstand operational pressure without permanent damage or leaks.
Leak pressure testing is done by immersing the part in a clear liquid pressurized with air, nitrogen, or helium and checking for leaks. It’s a simple but effective test that can go further by using helium and a spectrometer to check for leaking.

Under Pressure, Undersea
External pressure testing services, such as that required for subsea components, is very difficult, especially for large parts. In those instances, a pressure vessel is required that can accommodate the piece while also having a removable end for the test piece to be placed inside. We have a limited capacity for external pressure testing but are willing to consider adding the capability to accommodate new test requirements.
Transient Pressure Testing
Our transient pressure testing measures up to 100,000 psi using quartz transducers and charge amplifiers with very high response speeds. They accurately measure very rapid pressure changes, as you will find in gun barrels, chemical reactions, and so on.

Handling the Strain
Our strain gauges are small, highly specialized electrical resistors glued to a surface, and they measure changes in resistance as the structure stretches. The strain is calculated, taking into consideration the properties of the test material. This information determines at what point the test piece passed its elastic limit and started to yield.

Case Study: Thin-Walled Titanium Pipe
A high-strength, thin-walled, titanium pipe was tested to determine the burst pressure, and the longitudinal and circumferential stiffness. The chains were used as a safety precaution in case the end fittings blew off. The challenge was to seal the ends of the tube without welding, which could affect the material. The wall was too thin to thread, so we designed end fittings that could be glued on, resulting in no damage to the material and no stress concentrations. The fittings were designed to accommodate the anticipated end load of 210,000 pounds at burst pressure. The pipe was strain gauged using eight gauges to provide the information needed to calculate the stiffness.

Case Study: Thick-Walled Steel Tube
A thick-walled heat treated steel tube was strain gauged and burst to determine the elastic limit, the burst pressure, and the mode of failure (ductile or brittle). The strain was recorded up to the maximum pressure of 115,000 psi.
